Hands-On Tested

Otter.ai

Otter.ai converts meetings and imported recordings into searchable transcripts, summaries, action items, and AI Chat answers. In our controlled Basic-plan test, it captured every tested date, amount, and percentage, yet missed all four critical target terms—including brand names and the reference code—making it fast for recall but not reliable enough to use without review.

Independently reviewed using official sources and 3 hands-on tests conducted by GoTaskAI in August 2026. Last verified: August 15, 2026.

Testing summary: We imported a controlled 97.75-second, single-speaker English recording and evaluated transcription accuracy, Summary, Outline, Action Items, and AI Chat against a verified reference transcript. Custom Vocabulary was then evaluated separately as an unscored remediation step.
Plan used: Basic (Free) plan
Best result: AI Chat scored 9.2/10 and correctly refused to invent two details that were absent from the meeting.
Main limitation: Action Items converted a real decision into an unsupported implementation task with no stated owner or deadline.
Human review needed: Required

Quick Verdict

Otter.ai handled the factual spine of our meeting well: every target date, amount and percentage was correct, the postponed launch was not mistaken for a cancellation, and AI Chat refused to invent a missing deadline or law-firm name. Its weak point was operational precision. All four critical target terms were wrong, Custom Vocabulary fixed only one, and Automatic Action Items turned a real decision into an unassigned task. Strong for meeting recall; human verification is still part of the workflow.
Best For
Teams, consultants, researchers and students who need fast meeting recall and can verify critical details before acting.
Worth It?
Yes — when searchable recall and follow-up speed matter more than producing a final, verification-free record.
Main Strength
Grounded meeting recall: accurate numbers, preserved decision status and AI Chat that refused to invent missing details.
Main Weakness
Names, reference codes and generated assignments were unreliable enough to require human review before follow-up.

What is Otter.ai?

Otter.ai is an AI meeting assistant that records or imports audio, produces searchable transcripts, builds summaries and outlines, extracts action items, and answers questions through AI Chat. GoTaskAI tested this workflow on the Basic plan with a fixed 97.75-second English WAV containing dates, financial figures, percentages, brand names, a structured reference code, approved decisions, a rejected proposal and deliberately missing information. Otter captured the numbers and key decision distinctions well, while AI Chat stayed grounded when asked for details the meeting never provided. The trade-off appeared in proper nouns and follow-up: all four critical target terms failed initially, and one real decision became an unassigned implementation task. Live meeting-bot joining, calendar auto-join and paid integrations were not tested.

Key Features

Searchable Transcription with Audio Playback

Otter turns recorded or imported audio into searchable text linked to playback. In our 97.75-second controlled test, it captured every targeted date, amount and percentage correctly, making the transcript useful for quickly locating factual details.

Meeting Summaries and Structured Outlines

The generated summary preserved important distinctions instead of flattening them. It correctly reported that the launch was postponed rather than canceled and kept the proposed 15% advertising-budget increase separate from the decisions that were actually approved.

Automatic Action Items

Otter can extract follow-up tasks from a conversation, but the output should not be treated as final. In our test, it converted the approved decision to use DeepL into an implementation task even though the meeting assigned no owner or deadline.

Grounded AI Chat

Users can question a meeting instead of rereading the full transcript. When we requested Daniel Brooks’s deadline and the name of a law firm—two details absent from the recording—AI Chat explicitly said they were not stated rather than inventing answers.

Speaker Labels and Synchronized Review

Otter connects transcript text with audio playback and supports speaker identification, helping users return to the original recording when a name, number or assignment needs verification. Our scored test used one speaker, so multi-speaker accuracy was not evaluated.

Custom Vocabulary

Users can add names, terminology and reference codes to improve recognition. However, adding four exact entries in our remediation corrected only DeepL; GoTaskAI, ElevenLabs and the structured reference code remained incorrect, so the feature did not remove the need for manual correction.

Pros & Cons

Our test produced a revealing split: Otter.ai was highly dependable with numbers, missing-information questions and decision status, but noticeably weaker with names, reference codes and task ownership. That matters because a polished transcript can still contain small errors capable of changing real follow-up work.

Pros

  • Excellent numerical capture: Every targeted date, time, amount and percentage in the controlled recording was preserved correctly, including $2,450, $785.50, 91.8%, 2.5% and €12,620.
  • Important decision distinctions survived: Otter correctly kept “postponed” separate from “canceled” and did not present the rejected 15% advertising-budget proposal as an approved decision.
  • AI Chat resisted invented answers: It explicitly stated that Daniel Brooks had no recorded deadline and that no law-firm name was provided, while retaining Michael Chen’s real before-noon constraint.
  • Fast processing on our test file: The 97.75-second controlled recording was processed in 39.24 seconds, allowing the transcript and generated meeting layers to become available quickly.
  • A useful end-to-end workflow on the free plan: Basic allowed us to import audio, inspect the transcript, review the summary and action items, and question the meeting through AI Chat without paying.
  • Audio-linked verification: Searchable text and synchronized playback make it easier to return to the source when a name, number, decision or assignment looks uncertain.

Cons

  • Critical terminology was unreliable: None of the four target terms was completely correct in the baseline transcript, including GoTaskAI, DeepL, ElevenLabs and the structured reference code.
  • Custom Vocabulary delivered limited improvement: After adding all four exact entries, only DeepL became correct. The remediation finished with just 1 of 4 unique target terms and 2 of 7 target occurrences exact.
  • Generated tasks can overstate the source: Automatic Action Items converted the real DeepL decision into an implementation task even though the meeting provided no owner or deadline for that work.
  • Human correction remained necessary: Producing the exact final transcript required five replacements and a complete correction workflow of 2:07 after Otter finished processing the file.
  • The Basic plan has restrictive limits: Free users receive 300 monthly transcription minutes, conversations of up to 30 minutes, only three lifetime imports and limited AI Chat usage.
  • Language and responsibility limits remain: Arabic is not among the currently listed transcription languages, while recording consent, privacy suitability and sensitive meeting handling remain the user’s responsibility.

What Our Controlled Test Revealed

Otter was strongest when retrieving numerical facts and answering questions about what the meeting did or did not contain. The same workflow also exposed its main limitation: a polished transcript still required human review for critical terminology and generated assignments.

Final Verdict

Recommended for

Best for teams, consultants, researchers, and students who want fast English meeting transcripts, useful summaries, action-item extraction, and grounded follow-up Q&A—and can include a brief human review before using the output as an official record.

Verify Before Use

Do not rely on Otter.ai alone for names, brand terms, reference codes, deadlines, or task ownership. In our test, critical terms were missed and a genuine decision was converted into an unsupported action item. Verify these details against the audio before sharing minutes, assigning work, or making operational decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Otter.ai free to use?

Yes. Otter.ai’s Basic plan is free and includes 300 monthly transcription minutes, live transcription, speaker identification, AI Chat, and three lifetime audio or video file imports. These limits were verified in August 2026 and may change over time.

How accurate is Otter.ai transcription?

Otter.ai scored 8.7/10 in our controlled English transcription test. It captured every tested date, amount, and percentage correctly, but none of our four critical brand terms and reference codes was exact on the first attempt. Accuracy therefore depends on the audio and terminology, and important details should be checked against the recording.

Can Otter.ai summarize meetings and create action items?

Yes. Otter.ai generated a useful summary, outline, and action-item list, earning 8.6/10 in our meeting-intelligence test. It preserved important distinctions, including a postponed rather than canceled launch, but it also converted a real decision into an unsupported task with no stated owner or deadline. Review action items before assigning work.

Can Otter AI Chat answer questions about a meeting reliably?

Otter AI Chat scored 9.2/10 in our test. It correctly answered questions about meeting decisions and refused to invent an unstated deadline or law-firm name. However, one response slightly overclassified a meeting detail, so sensitive answers should still be confirmed in the transcript or audio.

Does Otter.ai Custom Vocabulary improve names and technical terms?

It can help, but our results were limited. After adding four exact entries to Custom Vocabulary, Otter improved only one of the four target terms and corrected two of seven affected occurrences. Names, brand terms, abbreviations, and reference codes may still require manual correction.

Does Otter.ai support Arabic transcription?

As of our August 2026 verification, Arabic was not included in Otter.ai’s official list of supported transcription languages, and we did not test Arabic transcription. Arabic-speaking users should confirm the current language list before subscribing or relying on Otter.ai for Arabic meetings.
